Wales Nature Week 2022

Survey image

Our theme for 2022 was ‘Get Connected - The Well-being Benefits of Nature’.Throughout Wales, partner organisations organised Wales Nature Week events allowing people to participate in and enjoy the natural world.

In 2022, we were delighted to return to in-person events across Wales in addition to online events. Events were well attended and included well-being walks, yoga sessions, wildflower rambles, bioblitzes and wildlife recording. Our swift walks proved very popular with soaring attendances!

A huge thanks to our partner organisations who make Wales Nature Week possible and to the people and communities in Wales for taking part!

Tell us what nature means to you

This Wales Nature Week we would love to know what nature means to you. Please share how you have benefitted personally from engaging with nature. Nature can be anywhere, from your garden, a public park, coastal region, nature reserve or countryside. This is an anonymous survey of your views about nature that will help in the success of Wales Nature Week going forward.

Click here to take the survey

Five reasons why nature is good for you

  • 10-30 minutes looking at or being in nature can decrease stress
  • Access to green space can improve the mental well-being and cognitive development of children
  • Forest bathing or ‘Shinrin-Yoku’, in Japanese, can reduce anxiety by 29%
  • Viewing a forest landscape can lead to lower pulse rate and lower blood pressure
  • A 90 minute nature walk can reduce negative thoughts

Experiencing nature -in meadows, woodland, by the sea, the local park or your garden is good for the soul. Take a moment to really notice the sights, sound, and scents. The texture of tree bark and meadow grasses through touch, the feel of wet sand as you walk on the beach. We encourage you to use your senses at Wales Nature Week events as well as taking the opportunity to learn more about the natural world. Once learned, it’s a lifetime skill you can call on to relax mind and body.

Volunteering for nature is also rewarding- giving back to nature and supporting the work of numerous organisations and community groups, all engaged with preserving our precious habitats and species in Wales. Get involved- many of the events will highlight opportunities for you to volunteer and your Local Nature Partnership coordinator is a great place to engage with nature in your area.

What we appreciate we are more likely to care for and nurture.

National efforts to protect, enhance and restore nature at our flagship sites in Wales are critical and go hand in hand with initiatives such as the Local Places for Nature scheme-creating nature-rich spaces in our towns, cities and communities across Wales. Where nature thrives, people and communities thrive.

Nature’s voice is often crowded out by seemingly more immediate priorities- by connecting with nature and the organisations who speak up for nature you can be part of a powerful voice for change. After all, nature and climate action are too important to be stuck in the slow lane of priorities.

Wales Nature Week is not possible without the help of our partner organisations who work tirelessly throughout the year to educate, speak up for, monitor and make action happen for nature. Thank you!
