Mandinam

Mandinam Estate is a large rural holding near Llangadog in Carmarthenshire, set on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It represents a landscape-scale initiative of notable ambition, underpinned by a clear and long-term commitment to nature recovery and a strong ethos of environmental stewardship.

The estate supports a mosaic of species-rich grasslands, native deciduous woodland, wetlands, riparian corridors and heathland mosaics. This diversity, combined with the estate's exceptional scale, supports a wide range of habitats and a strong diversity of species across fungi, plants, birds, bats and other fauna. Priority species including lesser horseshoe bat, skylark and marsh fritillary are present, alongside notable native plants such as wood anemone. The presence of bat maternity colonies reflects suitable roosting conditions and sufficient surrounding foraging resources within the wider landscape.

Mandinam demonstrates clear biodiversity value, supported by a strong baseline of ecological surveys and ongoing monitoring. Management is directed towards achieving both ecological and financial sustainability, informed by professional ecological advice and strengthened by data from cattle grazing patterns and planned fixed-point photography. Active involvement of local people, neighbouring land managers and advisors further supports delivery on the ground.

Underpinned by strong and demonstrable landowner commitment and operating at a scale that allows ecological processes to function across a connected landscape, Mandinam provides a positive and leading example of how large estates can contribute meaningfully to nature recovery in Wales and to wider 30by30 ambitions.
