Habitat Preferences and Water Dependency of BAP Priority species linked to Freshwaters in Wales

Freshwaters are important for a huge range of biodiversity, and knowing which species are linked to which particular freshwater habitat can be a bewildering task. The Freshwater Group has produced a spreadsheet to help inform BAP actions on particular habitats to ensure that the needs of Priority species are taken into account. We have subdivided freshwaters into three main habitats: rivers and streams; lakes; and ponds. We have then linked each priority species to any of these habitats that it uses, including an indication of the level of importance of the habitat to the species, and some brief notes on any specific habitat requirements.

You can use the information in a number of ways. For example, if you're planning a river restoration project, you might want a list of species that may benefit for a bid document. You may also wish to organise your project so that species that are particularly dependant on this habitat are helped most, then look for opportunities to benefit species that occasionally use rivers as well. From a species management perspective, the spreadsheet could help to target areas or habitat types that are most likely to benefit the species.

We hope this is useful and welcome any comments or suggestions. We will update the spreadsheet occasionally if new information becomes available. For detailed advice on management of any of the species listed, we recommend you contact the Species Expert Group

Million Ponds Project

The Million Ponds Project aims to address this and provide new, clean water habitat for wildlife by creating an extensive network of new ponds across the UK. The project is a collaboration of major landowners and land managers, co-ordinated by Pond Conservation. For further information, please click on ponds link
