Blaenau Gwent

Claire Pooley
Biodiversity Action Plan Officer

Blaenau Gwent supports a rich diversity of habitats ranging from semi-natural ancient woodland to unimproved acid grassland and heathland. There are also large areas of common that are important resources for wildlife as well as for farming and recreation, and numerous lakes and ponds that are particularly important for amphibians, invertebrates, and birds. The restoration of derelict land in the area has provided considerable opportunities for wildlife through habitat creation. For instance, new areas of heathland have provided important habitat for a wide variety of wildlife such as skylark, grey partridge, grayling butterfly, and adder.

The Blaenau Gwent Biodiversity Partnership meets quarterly and includes: Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, BSBI, BTCV Cymru, Butterfly Conservation, Coed Cymru, Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency Wales, Forestry Commission, Gwent Bat Group, Gwent Badger Group, Gwent Ornithological Society, Gwent Police, Gwent Wildlife Trust, Lower Arael View T.R.A, RSPB Cymru, Welsh Owl and Wildlife Sanctuary and Welsh Water.

The Local Biodiversity Action Plan provides a framework for reversing the decline of Blaenau Gwent’s wildlife resource and includes 14 Habitat Action Plans and 21 Species Action Plans.
