WBP Activities
Steering Group Activities
The WBP Steering Group meet 3 times a year to set the overall steer and implementation of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan in Wales and the outcomes contained in the Environment Strategy, Wales. The group brings together all sectors in a partnership supported by the work of individuals, groups and organisations locally and nationally. Within this framework, specific task and finish groups are set up to tackle key issues identified by the WBP steering group. For details of WBP steering Group meetings, click on this link.
Wales Biodiversity Week
WBP coordinates an annual week of events held in June each year celebrating the variety and diversity of our wildlife and habitats. Events are free and are held all over Wales, enthusing, educating and enabling members of the public to become wildlife guardians on their patch. This year, Wales Biodiversity Week ran from 7th - 15th June.
Conference
An annual Wales Biodiversity Partnership Conference is held to support, educate and enthuse biodiversity practitioners in Wales. This year, Wales hosts the UK BAP Conference at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. The theme is 'Delivering for Wildlife: biodiversity - a keystone of sustainable development'.
6th Annual UK Biodiversity Partnership Conference, Aberystwyth University on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th September 2008.
The intention of the conference is to bring together the biodiversity community to discuss themes and issues of common concern. The title of this year's conference is Delivering for Nature: Biodiversity - a keystone of Sustainable Development.
The programme includes an Exchange Fair on the first day of the conference, with a wide variety of interest groups linked to the conference theme of sustainable development. If you wish to provide a display for the Exchange Fair, please complete the appropriate section
on the attached reply slip. We are limited as to the number of stalls we can accommodate. Allocation will be on a first come - first served basis so we would recommend an early response to avoid any disappointment. Display boards and tables will be provided.
In keeping with our theme, we have arranged for those delegates that arrive early to have an opportunity to visit a project on the morning of Wednesday 10th September (further details can be found in the Field Trip programme), and during the evening, there will be a formal reception held at the University.
There will also be workshop sessions available over the two days on a variety of subjects linked to the conference theme which we hope will be of interest to you.
The conference is free of charge with delegates welcome to choose what elements they wish to attend throughout the two days. Delegates are responsible for making their own arrangements with regards to travel and accommodation and covering own costs.
Please confirm by 29th August that you wish to attend the conference to

WBP Workplan
A significant part of WBP activities relates to key biodiversity outcomes contained in the Environment Strategy Wales. The associated actions are contained in the WBP Workplan.
- Outcome 19: The loss of biodiversity has been halted and we can see a definite recovery in the number, range and genetic diversity of wildlife, including those species that need very specific conditions to survive.
Timeline: International commitment to halt loss of biodiversity by 2010. Recovery to be underway by 2026.
- Outcome 20: The wider environment is more favourable to biodiversity through appropriate management, reduced habitat fragmentation and increased extent and interconnectivity of habitats.
Timeline: By 2010
- Outcome 21: Sites of international, Welsh and local importance are in favourable condition to support the species and habitats for which they have been identified.
Timeline: By 2010, 95% of international sites in favourable condition; by 2015, 95% of Welsh SSSIs in favourable condition; by 2026, all sites to be favourable condition.
- Outcome 22: Our seas will be clean and support healthy ecosystems that are biologically diverse and productive and managed sustainably.
In addition, a climate change adaptation plan, which sets out what actions will be taken to adapt to the impacts of climate change in Wales will be delivered.
