Bryn Griffiths
Biodiversity Officer
I work mainly on the Natur Gwynedd LBAP and in the last year we’ve held a few surveys and training days on the dormouse, grassland fungi, arable weeds. We’ve held a number of events as part of Wales Biodiversity Week including botanical walks, bat walks, rock pool safari as well as visiting several primary schools.
At the moment we’re getting the public, including schools, involved in a survey of local wildlife – people can input information of what they’ve seen over the internet at the following website:

This summer we’re also hoping to get the help of volunteers to carry out a survey of arable weeds on farms on the Llŷn Peninsula.

Gwynedd has a wealth of wildlife and a diversity of habitats, many of which have been identified for priority action with Natur Gwynedd, the Local Biodiversity Action Plan for Gwynedd (outside the Snowdonia National Park).
Specific action plans have been developed for many of Gwynedd's habitats including several different woodland types, upland and lowland heathlands, hedgerows, cloddiau, rhos pasture and river corridors. Many coastal and marine habitats also have dedicated action plans, such as maritime cliff and slopes, mudflats, Honeycomb worm reefs, Horse mussel reefs, seagrass beds and maerl beds.
Species identified for priority action within Natur Gwynedd include mammals such as brown hare, hazel dormouse, water vole and lesser horseshoe bat, a variety of birds including barn owl, chough and lapwing, fish species including Arctic charr and commercial fish, adder and newts, marsh fritillary and a number of other invertebrates, several higher and lower plant species including Bluebell and Golden hair lichen, plus Marine animals.
Natur Gwynedd has a steering group which meets at least biannually and includes Gwynedd Council, statutary environmental and conservation bodies such as CCW and EAW, non governmental organisations concerned with wildlife and conservation such as BTCV Cymru and North Wales Wildlife Trust, the Farming unions, and representatives from University of Wales Bangor.
