Camarthenshire

Isabel Macho
Biodiversity Officer

Carmarthenshire is blessed with a rich variety of biodiversity, from the rugged uplands and their steep oak woodlands in the north east of the county to the varied coastal habitats around Carmarthen Bay . Throughout the agricultural land and around the urban areas runs a network of wildlife habitats - hedgerows, woods, wet meadows and watercourses - all rich in species, which greatly influences the character of the landscape and its natural beauty. The biodiversity of the county contributes to the quality of life of the people who live and work in Carmarthenshire, and is a significant element in the local tourism and recreation industries.

The Carmarthenshire Local Biodiversity Action Plan is being produced by a partnership of 18 organisations, including the Forestry Commission, CCW, National Trust and the Farmers' Unions, which meet three times a year. The LBAP contains a series of action plans covering the nationally threatened or declining species and habitats in the county, as well as species and habitats of local concern. It includes for example, action plans for lowland meadows, upland oak woods and post industrial habitats and red squirrel, water vole and red kite.

Each action plan will include projects aimed at safeguarding that particular habitat or species within the county. If these projects are to succeed, they will require a number of individuals and organisations to work together in partnership - including land owners, government agencies, wildlife conservation groups, local authorities and industry. Current projects include annual biodiversity seminar for sixth formers, surveys for the brown hairstreak butterfly, working with a council tenant farmer on projects on his farm, habitat bookmarks, as well as the continued publication of plans for the LBAP.
